The 20-year-old has since been released on bail, but is now facing further charges after first being detained following his girlfriend's cry for help on social media.
Mason Greenwood's arrest
Up until 2 February, Greenwood remained in custody for questioning after heavy accusations were made public on Instagram. A GMP statement reads:
A man was arrested after we became aware of social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence. Suspect remains in custody for questioning after additional time authorised by Magistrates' court.
Following enquiries so far, he has since been further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill. Enquiries are ongoing and the victim continues to be offered specialist support.
As reported earlier, it has been understood that the victim's account had been hacked—publicising evidence of the abuse without her consent, according to her father. As a result, The Greater Manchester Victims’ Services has released a statement urging people to respect the victim's request for anonymity at the risk of jeopardising the ongoing investigation:
We remind people to avoid any commentary or sharing of images that could compromise the victim's right to lifelong anonymity, or risk prejudicing a live investigation with active proceedings.
