Many people across the globe have been forced to stop working due to COVID-19. Carlos Elizondo from Mexico is just one of the many. Since he couldn’t continue his job as at the supermarket, he did manage to find a rather original way to keep making money: he started making YouTube videos.

As El Diario MX reported, with the encouragement of his daughters, he created his channel called Tito Charly on 25th May… And he already has almost 450,000 subscribers!

The videos he posts on YouTube show him working in his kitchen in Monterrey (Nuevo León in northeast Mexico), where he shares his recipes and prepares dishes such as dried meats, grilled cheese and even bread rolls. The short clips are filmed using his phone and are simple, but full of good humour and the internet love them, which is proved by the 1.5 million views that his twelve online videos have accumulated.

‘Age shouldn’t hold you back’

Widowed, the father of three daughters and grandfather of six grandchildren, Carlos Elizondo was an entrepreneur his whole life. After his daughters got married and he retired, he took on a small job as a packer in a supermarket to meet other elderly people and earn a few extra pesos. But when the coronavirus struck, he and his colleagues, who were particularly vulnerable due to their advanced age, were sent home from work. As a result, the food lover found himself at home and bored.

His daughter Veronica then convinced him to try YouTube and he quickly found a following.

‘The grandfather I always wanted,’ said one viewer. ‘Age shouldn’t hold you back from pursuing your dreams, goals or even from entertaining,’ said another. Carlos Elizondo has even created his own range of ingredients that he uses in his recipes (cheeses, meats…). In his channel's description, Tito Charly also encourages others to go after their crazy dreams:

My daughters encouraged me to share my recipes. At my age, I still believe that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. Chase your dreams! Don’t give up!

Good on you Tito!
