All analysts predicted a future for him in the light heavyweight division, and he decided to try his luck against Forrest Griffin, who had just lost his title to Rashad Evans, but remained one of the best in his category. Silva's performance against this renowned opponent was historic.

He embarrassed the American during the first round, knocking him down several times, easily dodging his attacks, and ending with a right jab that made Griffin fall to the ground for the last time, exhausted after just three minutes in the cage. The fight was a display of utter domination, and another page in the Brazilian's book of legendary performances.
