I’m A Celeb 2020 has been hitting the headlines for all manner of things this year–including some royal revelations. West End actress Ruthie Henshall, who dated Prince Edward in the 1990s, caused a stir when she boasted to fellow campmate Shane Richie that she had ‘shagged in the bedrooms’ of Buckingham Palace.

Ruthie Henshall apologises for I’m A Celeb 2020 comments

Since being voted out of the castle on Sunday night, Ruthie has apologised for the comment–saying that she wasn’t aware the nation could hear it. She said:

I only said it to make Shane laugh. Then I quickly became aware everything is being recorded. Honestly, I forgot the cameras were there. It was meant to be a good old joke, a bit rude. But it was for Shane—it wasn't supposed to be for everyone.

This isn’t the first time someone with royal connections has been a campmate on I’m A Celeb–as Princess Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell came runner-up on the fourth series of the show back in 2004 whilst royal biographer Lady Colin Campbell infamously went into the jungle in 2015–though she left early ‘on medical grounds.’

Ruthie Henshall’s relationship with Prince Edward

Ruthie Henshall revealed on Desert Island Discs in 2008 that she had dated Prince Edward ‘solidly for a couple of years, but on and off for five’ in the 1990s. She said that they ‘couldn't quite let go’ of each other. However, Ruthie ultimately chose her career, which she realised it would be ‘impossible’ to continue if she stayed with the prince.

Prince Edward, the Queen’s youngest son, went on to marry Sophie Rhys Jones in 1999 and Ruthie was present at the wedding. Meanwhile, Ruthie married fellow musical theatre performer Tim Howar in 2004 and the couple have two daughters together–Lily and Dolly. They separated in 2009 and divorced a year later.
