Kamaru Usman Will Defend His Welterweight Title Against Jorge Masvidal In July
Dana White announced that Kamaru Usman would defend his welterweight title at International Fight Week against Jorge Masvidal.
Usman vs Masvidal
It's official. Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal will have the opportunity to settle their dispute this summer during International Fight Week. A fight announced by the Boss, Dana White, following the altercation that took place between the two men last week.
Asked a few moments after this exchange of courtesies, the president of the UFC confirmed that Kamaru Usman will defend his title against Jorge Masvidal:
âYeah, people think because Iâm a promoter that I love when that stuff happens, Iâm like cha-ching. Thatâs not the chance, and when that stuff happens, itâs bad. We are here at the Superbowl, and you are acting like a neanderthal in the middle of this place. And for the regular people here, they are scared people get scared.â
âYou were probably scared, I know you were scared. When that kind of stuff happens, first of all, we are lucky the police didnât get involved, and second of all, the commission gets involved. These two are going to fight in [Las] Vegas in July for 25 minutes, and they can do where ever they want to each other. They donât need to it right here in the middle of Radio Row.â
âThe Nigerian Nightmareâ vs âGamebredâ
It has been written. Jorge Masvidal's rebirth was bound to end with a fight for the title in his category. Now itâs official. At the age of 35, he got his first title shot among the elites following his three consecutive wins over Darren Till, Ben Askren, and more recently Nate Diaz. If he wins, he may well consider retiring from the sport or turning to the big-money superfights, such as one against Conor McGregor.
Kamaru Usman, meanwhile, will be looking to further solidify his position as the under 170 lb champion. After ripping the belt out of Tyron Woodley's hands after a 25-minute masterclass, the Nigerian Nightmare performed a TKO on Colby Covington in the fifth and final round of an epic fight. Now, for his second defence of the title, he will need to annihilate Jorge Masvidal's striking moves.
