One out of every 90 pregnancies in the UK is ectopic—meaning that the egg accidentally plants itself outside the womb and, as a result, the foetus begins developing in an area where it is physically impossible to carry on with the pregnancy. In most cases, this occurs somewhere in the fallopian tubes.

Ectopic pregnancy

However, this doctor came across a pregnant woman whose baby was forming in a completely different space altogether—her liver.

Paediatrician Dr. Micheal Narvey, from the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba in Canada, revealed the find on his TikTok platform, along with ultrasound images that shocked his viewers. The 33-year-old woman apparently got herself checked after she was experiencing a 14-day period. He explained:

I thought I had seen it all – a 33-year-old woman comes in with a 14-day history of menstrual bleeding and 49 days since her last menstrual period.
What they find in the liver is this: a baby. She had an ectopic pregnancy in her liver.
We see these sometimes in the abdomen but never in the liver. This is a first for me.

Dangers of ectopic pregnancy

Although 11,000 ectopic pregnancies are recorded in the UK, cases of babies forming in the liver are exceptionally rare. According to The Sun, another similar case was published in the Journal of Emergencies, Trauma and Shock in 2012.

This time around, it was a 25-year-old who suffered from an ectopic pregnancy in which an 18-week-old foetus was 'attached to her liver.' At 18-weeks, the baby is about the size of a bell pepper.

Unfortunately, by the time the ectopic pregnancy was discovered, it had to be removed through surgery and the woman passed away due to excessive bleeding during the procedure.
