The boy's mother, Jemma Lovell, says that her eldest son, Oz, has never identified as a boy, but doesn't consider himself a girl either. His mother says that he's gender-neutral and that she lets him experiment as much as he wants to strengthen his self-confidence.
However, the amount of freedom she gives her son has been scrutinized by a lot of people since Lovell confessed that she lets him watch “RuPaul’s Drag Race”, a TV show that inspired her son to create his alter ego, Ben TrulyOutrageous.
"‘I have had some negativity. People have said I’m pushing Oz to grow up too quickly, and even threatened to call social services," his mother admitted. She also shared that he started wearing makeup when he was 8.
Both Lovell and her partner agree that it is important for them to give their child the freedom he needs to discover himself. They went to a drag event with him to learn a little more about the world of drag, and show Oz that they support him.
At the event, the child's mother says that her son read posters and information about sexuality and that he took her hand to show her one about the gender-neutrality because he doesn't identify as male or female.
Oz's parents said they made an announcement at Oz's school to let other students and staff know about their child's particularities and tastes. Lovell explained that, fortunately, the school's response has been positive so far. So much so, that they allow Oz to use whichever bathroom he wants to use.
Jemma Lovell, who is also the mother of a 5-year-old girl, says that she fears for the psychological well-being of her son as he grows older. She believes that because he's young, people seem to be a bit more tolerant now, but she doubts that they'll be this tolerant in the future.
