Sight is one of the blessings that many of us take for granted. For those of us with poor vision, glasses are an absolute necessity in day to day life. However, wearing glasses can prove to be a bit of a nuisance day in and day out. Thanks to researchers in Israel, there may be a new alternative solution for the visually impaired.
Researchers at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center and Bar-Ilan University’s Institute of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials in Israel developed an eye-drop they’ve named “nanodrops” that could actually eliminate entirely the need for prescription glasses. The solution is comprised of nanoparticles that, when dropped in the eye, can correct far-sightedness, near-sightedness, as well as other conditions.
Over seventy percent of people in the United Kingdom currently wear glasses or contact lenses to correct their vision, so this innovation could see great use. However, researchers have only tested the eye-drop solution on pigs and have not stated how many applications would be needed to maintain the effects. Human trials are due to start later this year.
