It can be tough to break bad habits, especially if they involve something you’ve been doing for years and years. Thankfully, one scientist from Stanford created a model that can help anyone out.
One scientist, BJ Fogg, composed a book titled Tiny Habits, which unveils easy-to-use methods to help you break your bad habits. Do you find yourself consuming a lot of fried food? Do you find that you hate exercising? It can help.
In the book, Fogg gives an example of Juni, a sugar addict. Despite the fact that Juni adores sugar, she still lives a healthy lifestyle—she especially enjoys running. Therefore, when she first signed up Tiny Habits, it was to help her prepare for the Chicago Marathon.
But then something tragic happened: her mom passed away. Instead of turning to healthy habits to get over her mom’s death, she turned to sugar to help heal the undeniable pain.
Juni immediately asked her husband to grab her “bubblegum ice cream from Baskin-Robbins.” And she continued to consume sugar to help ease her sadness over the next two years.
The radio host ended up gaining 15 pounds, making running more difficult. She also found that the sugar propelled fogginess at work. So Juni decided to join Fogg’s Behaviour Design Boot Camp to learn mechanisms on how to reshape or life, and most importantly, how to shake her desire for sugar.
But she found it weird that Tiny Habits focused more on developing new habits rather than breaking old ones. After Juni acknowledged that grief was the root of the problem, she began to develop healthy habits to help her get over the grief—she didn’t just focus on consuming less sugar.
She started to journal and made a point of reaching out to friends via social media. These small habits helped her deal with her grief, resulting in less of a desire to consume sugar! So what are some of Fogg’s tips and tricks on how to combat bad habits? Take a look at our video to find out!
