It’s social media’s newest trend—the ‘Trash Tag Challenge’ is mobilizing the world’s internauts to protect the environment. The principle is a simple one: take a picture of a place where trash has accumulated, clean up the area, then take another picture of the spot to immortalize it with a before/after post.
The ‘Ice Bucket Challenge,’ the ‘Mannequin Challenge,’ or more recently the ’10 Year Challenge’—on social media, challenges of all kinds are multiplying. The latest of the genre is called the ‘Trash Tag Challenge.’ Its goal? Convince people to take action to save the environment.
The idea is simple: take a picture of a place overrun with trash. After cleaning it up, take another pic for a before/after post. The result is always enlightening, for post-viewers as much as for the challenge participants.
Taking care of our planet
Though it’s true that such posts remind us of just how badly we humans pollute our Earth, they also illustrate that it’s possible to change our ways. The parks, beaches, streets, and other previously trash-ridden areas that have benefited from these Instagrammers' intensive clean-up are heartwarming proof.
‘It’s the only outdoors we have. We all use it for many different things but it is the only one we have. So let’s all do our part and treat it with respect,’ says instagrammer Cody Lee Hanson.
And remember, the best thing is always not to litter in the first place!
