According to scientists, this characteristic exists for a particular reason. Van Heusinger was the first to study the phenomenon in 1864 and he determined that it’s due to a ‘hereditary birth defect.’

Half of those affected have a hole at the top of one ear while the other half have two holes. Over time, several other scientists became interested in this physical characteristic.
