Some people have a hole at the level of their ear, where the cartilage meets the face. It may be something you've never even noticed before but scientists have revealed the curious reason why. Check out the video to find out more!

What for some can seem to be a simple physical particularity like so many others is known in scientific circles as the preauricular sinus. According to scientists, this characteristic exists for a particular reason. Van Heusinger was the first to study the phenomenon in 1864 and he determined that it’s due to a ‘hereditary  birth defect.’

Half of those affected have a hole at the top of one ear while the other half have two holes. Over time, several other scientists became interested in this physical characteristic.

According to the theory of the biologist Neil Shubin which was published in Business Insider, the orifice evolved from fish gills. Which certainly makes us wonder about some people’s ancestors...
