Susanta Nanda, an Indian forest ranger, posted the morbid picture with the following question: "Can you identify this animal?"

The post, which already has about 200 RTs and more than 1.4 thousand likes, received tons of comments from other users, who expressed their fear and tried to guess what creature it was.

And many of them were convinced they were looking at a zombie's fingers, as is often the case in life, there's a much more coherent explanation for the photo.

A horrific mushroom

According to experts, it's actually a picture of a type of fungus called Xylaria Polymorpha.

According to La Vanguardia, this type of fungus often grows to look like horrific human extremities, and they're usually found in wooded areas in the spring and autumn, at the base of rotting or decaying tree stumps.
