If you’re anything like us, you can’t wait to return back to the Upside Down after finishing the second series of Stranger Things. We’ve been able to piece together the clues the cast and crew have been dropping since series 2’s release around Halloween 2017 and we’re ready to present you a full rundown of everything known so far about series 3: from casting, release date, spoilers, and more!

Stranger Things series 3 release date

After the massive success of series 2’s release, we can trust that The Duffer Brothers know exactly what they’re doing. Surely withholding a release date is a good tactic for building hype, but come on guys one hint wouldn’t hurt would it?

While we may not have gotten an exact date yet, we do however know how to do math. Approximately 14 months passed between the first two series, therefore we can assume that this wait may be around the same length of time. However, who knows if the show’s creators didn’t push for this date to coincide with Halloween.

In December 2017, David Harbour let loose some interesting, albeit depressing information to Variety: ‘I mean, one of the things that’s annoying for fans is that it takes us a long time to do them. Like, you probably won’t get [series 3] until sometime in 2019. But also part of the thing is, like any good thing, they need time. And those guys work so hard. I mean, they just sit in their apartment and write for 12, 14 hours a day.”

Who will we see in the cast of series 3?

No need to panic: all of favourites (except Bob, may he rest in peace) will be back for the third round. According to Matt Duffer, we’ll even get to see a lot more of a rather unexplored character in the upcoming series, Erica: ‘There will definitely be more Erica in season 3. That is the fun thing about the show — you discover stuff as you’re filming. We were able to integrate more of her in, but not as much you want because the story [was] already going. “We got to use more Erica,” that was one of the first things we said in the writers’ room.’

While we may be expecting the series to pick up exactly where we left off at the end of the second series, a jump forward in time may be necessary due to the fact that Mike and the gang are definitely starting to show physically that they’re no longer young kids! Could we potentially see them at Hawkins High School?

A new couple?

While it’s devastating that the legend known as Bob Newby is no longer with us, it does leave room for Hopper to come in and get together with Joyce. They certainly have seemed to be pushing much more during this previous series. Could we see Eleven and Will living under the same roof?

The most popular theories among fans

In the very last episode, we got a look at the monster known as “The Mind Flayer” as Eleven battled it to close the inter-dimensional gate between the real world and the Upside Down. We thought that we had seen the last of the beast; however the last scene at the Snow Ball proves that the monster survived the combat and is looming over the middle school. According to the Duffer Brothers, there may be another confrontation between Eleven and the monster: ‘They’ve shut the door on the Mind Flayer, but not only is it still there in the Upside Down, it’s very much aware of the kids, and particularly Eleven. It had not encountered her and her powers until that final episode. Now, it knows that she’s out there. We wanted to end on a little bit of an ominous note on that level.’

In episode seven, we finally truly meet Eight – experimental sister of Eleven. We learn that, like Eleven, she has supernatural powers. So far we’ve met only the two of them, so could there be another nine in the wild that we may meet in the upcoming series? What kind of chaos could come if all of them meet together in one place?

Hidden Easter eggs in series 1 and 2

Jim Hopper wears a blue hair tie on his wrist that once belonged to his daughter Sara in every episode since the beginning, but during the conclusion of series we can see that Eleven is actually sporting the bobble at the Snow Ball. David Harbour has kept tight lipped in regards to why it’s been passed on to her, however he assures us that we’ll have an answer in the upcoming series: ‘At the end of the series you'll see that Jim is not wearing it anymore, but I don't want to to get too into that because that's something we may talk about sometime in season three,’ Harbour said. ‘It's something we'll delve more into in terms of Jim's daughter and him confronting this Eleven relationship and what that means ... there's more to be revealed there.’

Also, some eagle eyes viewers have noticed a very similar soft toy possessed by Eleven, Will, and Sara. Could this small connection be a sign of something bigger?

So there you have it: a definitive breakdown of everything we know about the much anticipated follow-up! In the meantime, we suggest you sit down for another viewing of the series with a pen and paper; we’re sure there are heaps of hidden clues that may suggest what will happen down the line!
