A teenage girl has been left ‘permanently disabled’ after doing 150 squats as punishment for sneaking snacks into her dormitory.
The girl, 14, was caught by one of her teachers at the Xianshi Vocational Senior High School in south-western China's Sichuan Province. The mother of the girl, who local media named as Zhou, said the incident occurred at in the evening of June 10.
300 squats punishment
Student leader, Mu, reportedly discovered a stash of snacks on the girl’s bed and ordered her to do 300 squats as punishment for violating school rules. The girl denied owning the snacks and asked to forfeit the punishment as she had suffered a foot injury in April 2020.
But Mu would not heed her caution and forced her to do the squats with a teacher looking on.
The girl suffered serious damage in her foot, requiring surgery. But doctors said, nothing could be done to reverse the damage. She would now have to walk with the help of crutches. This incident has left her clinically depressed.
According to local media, the supervising teacher in the dormitory at the time of the incident was fired a month later while investigations continue into the matter.
School authorities also offered the girl’s parents an equivalent of £12,500, but they have since declined. It is unclear whether they will be pursuing any legal action.
Earlier this year in April, a seven-year-old Taiwanese boy died after being thrown onto a mat 27 times during a judo class. He spent two months in a coma before passing away in June.
The Judo coach has been detained and could get a life imprisonment sentence if found guilty.
