A touchy subject in new relationships is the sexual history of one’s prospective partner. While some people are uncomfortable sharing that information, a man’s mental health platform has crunched the numbers to show which countries have more sexually active men.

A numbers game?

A survey conducted in 35 countries by the platform, Manual, found that on average, men across the globe have had nine sexual partners in their lifetime, with the UK averaging 9.8.

Topping the list of countries surveyed is Turkey with 14.5 sexual partners on average. Antipodean men also came up quite strongly on the list, with Australian men boasting an average of 13.3 sexual partners, and New Zealand men 13.2.

Three Scandinavian countries; Finland, Norway and Sweden all featured in the top 10 while their northernmost neighbour, Iceland, ranked fourth.

Dr Earim Chaudry, medical director of Manual, cautions against unhealthy use of the data.

While people in some countries prove to have more sexual partners than others, it is important not to compare yourself to these figures.

He also explained that the data does not capture the level of satisfaction that men from these countries have in their sex lives.

Safe, consensual sex should always also be practised, and the number of sexual partners does not correlate with a man’s level of satisfaction with their sex life.

Early bloomers

The report also tracked the average age at which men tend to have sex for the first time.

Here too, northern European countries featured prominently on the list, with Icelandic men losing their virginity at an average age of 15.6. Denmark and Sweden followed at 16.1 and 16.2 respectively.

The data indicated that men in the UK tend to delay their first sexual encounter until they have turned 18. The chart shows that the average age men in China, India and Malaysia first have sex is well into their twenties. Dr Earim Chaudry said:

In places with what could be thought of as a more liberal view on sex, including many European countries, we can see that the average age is lower. While we can see differences in countries, it is important to remember that men from all over the world should only have sex when they feel ready.
