The massage therapist who accused actor Kevin Spacey of sexual assault has died. The man’s death was confirmed by his lawyer on September 18, 2019.
As the MeToo movement gained traction, in September 2018, a massage therapist nicknamed John Doe accused Kevin Spacey of sexually assaulting him when he was 18 years old.
According to the massage therapist, the American actor forced him to touch his genitals during a massage in 2016. Kevin Spacey denied the accusation.
John Doe's lawyer confirmed the young man's death to CBS News. He explained that: "His untimely death was, to his family, a devastating shock that they are struggling to process and is so recent that they have not yet held his funeral."
Kevin Spacey's trial was scheduled for June 23rd. The actor's lawyers were quick to announce the plaintiff's death and file a death notice in court.
John Doe's lawyer describes their actions as an "unnecessary and contemptible" attempt to "gain the advantage of a ticking clock."
Once filed, the death notice triggers a 90-day countdown after which the case must be closed. The lawyer thus concludes that "the court may dismiss the case." John Doe isn't the only person who's accused the actor of sexual assault; a total of fifteen complaints have been filed against Kevin Spacey.
