The day of this event Nicholas Winton was surrounded by strangers, but he did not realise that in fact he knew them all. Nicknamed the ‘British Schindler,’ this man organised the rescue of hundreds of Jewish children in the greatest secrecy, who, once adults, came to thank him.

A true World War II hero, Sir Nicholas Winton, who died in July 2015, showed incredible courage when saving more than 600 Jewish children from death camps. Like Oskar Schindler, whose story was brought to the big screen in the movie ‘Schindler's List’, Nicholas Winton also drew up a list between 1938 and 1939 to save 669 Czech and Slovak Jewish children, organising their escape to Prague and London.

Hitherto unnoticed for half a century, his bravery was only made public in 1988, when his wife Greta discovered a briefcase hidden in an attic containing the lists of children that Nicholas Winton was able to save.

During an event, many of these survivors gathered to say thank you to their protector who of course did not recognise them. How could he have known that all these people around him were actually Holocaust survivors from 50 years ago?
