In an old psychiatric hospital, hundreds of suitcases belonging to former patients stand testament to the lives that were spent there.
Built in 1869, the Willard Asylum Mental Hospital was abandoned in 1995. It was later searched and what has been discovered inside is rather scary. In total, more than 400 suitcases belonging to former residents were unearthed.
The people who lived in this hospital would have been buried without funerals and their suitcases, unclaimed by their relatives, were forgotten until a photographer, Jon Crispin, became interested in them. He decided to photograph their contents to make an exhibition.
In 2014, the exhibition 'Changing the face of what is normal: mental health' took place at the San Francisco Exploratorium.
