Let’s face it, we all love the summer season but if there’s one major drawback to the hot months, it’s the mosquitoes. If you’re also tired of getting munched on by these feisty little beasts, you’ll be happy to know that we’ve found quite an effective tip to chase them away.
Coffee, the magical ingredient
Coffee isn’t just great for keeping us energised throughout the day, but coffee grounds can be used in a plethora of ways. It's a great fertiliser for your pet plants, and it can also reduce bad odours that have been stinking up your fridge.
What’s more? You can even use it to prevent blockages in your sink drains, and remove grease from your dishes. How versatile! But did you know that coffee grounds are the key to keeping mosquitoes at bay?
DIY mosquito repellent
For this tip to work properly, you have to take the coffee grounds out of your coffee maker and dry them in the sun for several hours—it’s a good thing it’s summer! Once they’re nice and crisp, spread them out on an aluminium tray or any container that isn’t easily flammable. Then, every evening light the coffee ground with a match and the smoke that comes out of the container will drive the mosquitoes away.
If you’re not a fan of coffee smoke yourself, you can make a citronella spray that will get the job done. Here’s what you need:
- Citronella essential oil
- Eucalyptus essential oil
- Lavender essential oil
- 60 ml of water
Mix all the ingredients and store it in a spray bottle so you can whip it out whenever you need.
