Since its release in 2018, Black Panther has been a huge success. Having grossed over £1 billion and receiving an Oscar Best Picture nomination, the film is the third biggest ever US box office success.
Following its worldwide success, it was only natural for Black Panther to be awarded a sequel. Although Marvel Studios have not yet made any official announcements about Black Panther 2, there is plenty of evidence that the second instalment will be arriving in the near future.
This is what we know
First, head of Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige confirmed during an interview for Entertainment Weekly that ‘I have nothing specific to reveal, except that we will absolutely do a sequel.’
Ryan Coogler, the director of the first Black Panther, has confirmed signing on for a second film. Marvel will take great care to ensure that there are as few leaks as possible, by keeping the script under lock and key, for example.
It's also been reported that Michael B. Jordan will be taking on the role of villain Killmonger again. Despite his death in the first film, he may well come back to life. The world of the dead is very present in Black Panther. It remains to be seen how he will be resurrected.
An uncertain future for Black Panther?
If all this seems promising, doubt remains about this second part, since lead character T'Challa’s future is uncertain. During the events of Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther was the victim of the sinister Thanos’ snap. He is therefore supposed to be dead.
The filming of Black Panther 2 is scheduled to begin in late 2019 or early 2020. We will know more about the future of Wakanda and its king when Avengers: Endgame is released in April...
