Reduce cravings and take better control of what you eat: these are the two main concerns of dietician and nutritionist Emily Field. She encourages clients to focus on three types of food: fats, carbohydrates and proteins. After all, proteins feed the muscles, carbohydrates give us energy and fats help us to absorb vitamins and minerals.

An important dietary balance as macronutrients regulate blood sugar levels and allow energy to be redistributed in the body after each meal. At least that is what the study published in the journal Nutritional Metabolism says.

As fats and proteins slow down the breakdown of carbohydrates into sugar, they act as a buffer against insulin highs and lows. To combat daily insulin fluctuations such as fatigue, Emily Field encourages her clients to ask themselves the question: 'How will I feel two hours after eating this meal?'

If you apply this theory to a fast food restaurant, ordering a second burger instead of fries makes more sense. Why? Bread is high in carbohydrates, meat, protein and fat! Without cheese or sauce, a burger is between 300 and 400 calories. A portion of French fries is high in fat and carbohydrates. Therefore, the food isn’t balanced! So, you know what to do next time!
