Will Smith reveals having struggled with sex addiction

Will Smith has admitted to struggling with a turbulent past consumed by sex addiction following the break-up with his first love.

The Men In Black star has candidly come out to the public with a memoir detailing the trajectory of his life from his earlier days to the man he has become today.

Sex as a coping mechanism

In his new book, Will, the actor digs deep into the end of a relationship he had with a woman named Melanie in which he spiralled out of control and how he attempted to self-medicate. In the book, Smith explains having formed a bond so interwoven with the past traumas of the woman in question that he ended up losing himself in the process.

After she cheated on him while he was on tour, the then rapper decided to turn to frivolous sex as a coping mechanism. He explains:

I desperately need relief but as there is no pill for heartbreak, I resorted to the homeopathic remedies of shopping and rampant sexual intercourse. Up until this point in my life, I had only had sex with one woman other than Melanie, but over the next few months, I went full ghetto hyena.

A psychosomatic reaction

Smith goes on to explain that the dangerous addiction he fostered took such a toll on his mind and body that he began to develop what he calls a 'psychosomatic reaction' every time he would orgasm. He says:

I had sex with so many women, and it was so constitutionally disagreeable to the core of my being, that I developed a psychosomatic reaction to having an orgasm It would literally make me gag and sometimes even vomit.

Before adding:

In every case, though, I hoped to God this beautiful stranger would be ‘the one’ who would love me, who would make this pain go away. But invariably, there I was, retching and wretched. And the look in the eyes of the women even further deepened my agony.
