But drones, which are much quieter and more discreet than noisy helicopters, can capture this kind of unique moment without scaring away the imposing beast.
In this footage we can see the blue whale's very unique method of feeding. They turn on their sides to feed on their prey - tiny crustaceans known as krill - as they swim along.
This drone footage will be highly useful for researchers to find out more about these magnificent creatures. And for the rest of us it's quite simply fascinating to see!
