The 54-year-old woman was attacked at Custer State Park in South Dakota. The attack caused the woman's pants to come off which could have been the only factor standing between her and a serious injury.
Witnesses believe that the unidentified woman was on her way to the 2020 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally when traffic came to a halt as bison had taken over the road.
Everyone in the area stopped their bikes and prepared to wait for the giant creatures to slowly make their way off the road and back onto the fields. Some tried to get a closer look at the animals while most others waited patiently at their vehicles.
But, the 54-year-old woman spotted a bison calf and decided it would be the perfect opportunity for a photo op. However, she seemed to miss the memo that not only can bison be super dangerous when provoked but also you should never mess with an animal's offspring.
The bison was clearly not in the mood for their baby's visitor and charged at the woman, catching the belt loops of her jeans on its horns. The woman was promptly taught a lesson as the bison flung her around like a rag doll before she fell and hit the floor leaving her unconscious.
Custer County Sheriff Marty Mechaley posted an update on Facebook claiming that the woman has avoided serious injury and issued a warning to other motorists in situations like this to wait in their vehicles and not try to get too close to the bison:
We would like to remind everyone to not pet the fluffy cows - also known as Bison/Buffalo. We have had calls about the fluffy cows blocking the road occasionally - some people are also getting too close. Remember this is their park and we are the guests....please give them a break and keep your distance.
While calling them fluffy cows makes Custer State Park sound like a petting zoo the warning must be heeded that buffalo are not afraid of confrontation, which is why you should be. The incident went viral on social media and the unidentified 54-year-old did not receive any sympathy from commenters. One person wrote:
Ignorance is so bliss for many people people who feel entitled to overlook warning signs. I don't feel sorry and I hope she learns her lesson. I'm glad she's ok.
Another agreed and added that people must be lacking something in the brain to attempt such a stunt:
I agree. Our last trip to SD people were getting out of their cars and trucks and trying to walk closer to the buffalo to take pics or even worse sneak up for pics. It must b a special kind of stupid.
A third person also chimed in:
You can't fix stupid, and no amount of signage or warnings or enforcement will stop all the idiots. I just hope nothing has to be done to the bison, it was just reacting normally
Looks like this woman will be more cautious next time she sees a 'fluffy cow'.
